Cychlorphine: A New Synthetic Opioid Threatening Communities

A new synthetic opioid, cychlorphine, has emerged as a significant threat in several states, including Tennessee and Arkansas. This potent drug, estimated to be 10 times stronger than fentanyl, has been linked to a growing number of overdose deaths.

Impact in Tennessee

In Knox County, Tennessee, officials have reported a sharp increase in overdose deaths associated with cychlorphine. Initially linked to 16 deaths in February, the number has surged to approximately 50 suspected fatalities by June. The rapid rise has prompted local authorities to issue warnings about this dangerous substance.

National Concerns

Across the nation, health and law enforcement officials are raising alarms about cychlorphine and other new synthetic drugs. The Center for Forensic Science Research and Education in Pennsylvania, a key player in the national illicit drug early warning system, has identified 23 new drugs in the first five months of 2026 alone.

Cychlorphine is often used as a cutting agent in other illicit drugs, making it difficult for users to detect. Standard testing methods, such as fentanyl test strips, do not identify cychlorphine, posing additional challenges for those trying to avoid it.

Detection and Response

In South Carolina, the drug was discovered during an investigation into a woman’s death, which initially showed no signs of drug use in standard toxicology tests. Similarly, Arkansas confirmed its first overdose death linked to cychlorphine in May.

Experts warn that overdoses involving cychlorphine may require multiple doses of naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, to reverse. Dr. Rachel Wirginis, an addiction medicine specialist, emphasized the need for awareness that a single dose of naloxone might not be sufficient.

As cychlorphine continues to spread, communities must remain vigilant and informed about the evolving drug landscape. The ongoing efforts by forensic labs and health officials are crucial in identifying and combating these emerging threats.
