Volunteers paint 49 tiny homes for Kansas City veterans, giving hope and fresh starts

In a heart‑warming display of community support, almost 100 volunteers rolled up their sleeves in Kansas City, Missouri, to paint 49 tiny homes that serve as transitional housing for veterans experiencing homelessness. The effort, organized by the Veterans Community Project (VCP) and the Veterans United Foundation, turned a simple coat of paint into a powerful reminder that the local community cares for its service‑men and women.

Veterans lead the effort

Among the volunteers was Michael Stradford, a veteran of the National Guard. “I joined the National Guard specifically because I wanted to help people in times of need,” Stradford said, noting that his commitment to service continues through projects like this one.

Impact felt by residents

Erik Morse, board president of Veterans United Foundation, described the moment a resident walked by a freshly painted home and exclaimed, “Whoa, this is so vibrant!” The smile on the resident’s face, Morse said, showed how a fresh coat can lift spirits and reinforce a sense of belonging.

Why stable housing matters

Brandonn Mixon, co‑founder and chief projects officer of VCP, emphasized that safe, stable housing is the foundation for any veteran trying to rebuild. “If you don’t have housing, you can’t do anything else. You need a place to rest your head, feel safe, have a front‑locking door, and then be able to say, ‘All right, what are my next steps?’” Mixon explained.

More than just paint

For Mixon, the second coat of paint represents more than aesthetics; it is “an extra coat of armor” that signals the community’s ongoing commitment. “It’s reassurance that, hey, the community cares about you. We have your back and we’re here to stay,” he said.

VCP’s decade of service

Since its founding ten years ago, VCP has helped more than 8,000 veterans find stable housing and a pathway to self‑sufficiency. The tiny‑home project adds another chapter to that legacy, showing how local volunteers can make a tangible difference in the lives of those who have served.

How you can help

Organizers welcome additional volunteers, donations of paint supplies, and community partners who want to join the effort. Those interested can contact the Veterans Community Project or the Veterans United Foundation for details on upcoming painting days and other ways to support Kansas City’s veteran population.

As the homes receive fresh colors, the message is clear: Kansas City stands with its veterans, offering not just shelter but a renewed sense of hope and belonging.
