Huntsville Roads to Close Temporarily for Heel and Crank Duathlon

The city of Huntsville, Alabama, will experience temporary road closures this Saturday morning as the Heel and Crank Duathlon takes place. The event, which combines cycling and running, will see participants navigating a course that requires specific traffic adjustments to ensure safety for both athletes and motorists.

Traffic Management and Road Closures

The Huntsville Police Department will be actively managing traffic flow to minimize disruptions while maintaining safety. Road closures and traffic restrictions will commence at 7 a.m. on June 6 and are expected to last until approximately 11 a.m. Motorists should prepare for delays, particularly in areas where cyclists will be traveling.

Key traffic impacts include:

  • Westbound traffic on Discovery Drive from Mark C. Smith Drive
  • Mark C. Smith Drive
  • Eastbound traffic on Moquin Drive at Genome Way Northwest
  • Northbound traffic on Discovery Drive from Explorer Boulevard

The cycling portion of the duathlon will occur along Explorer Boulevard. Traffic cones will be used to separate the roadway, directing vehicles to the outer loop while participants utilize the inner loop for their race. This setup is designed to enhance safety for all involved.

Police Presence and Safety Measures

Huntsville police officers will be stationed at critical intersections along the route. Their presence is intended to assist motorists and ensure a smooth flow of traffic while prioritizing the safety of the event’s participants. The community is encouraged to plan their travel routes accordingly and exercise patience during the event hours.
