Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office Issues Halloween Safety Tips for Kids and Drivers

EVANSVILLE, Indiana – As Halloween approaches, the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office is reminding local families that the night brings a heightened risk for pedestrians. Data from the office shows a 43% increase in pedestrian‑related fatalities on Halloween compared with typical evenings.

Why the risk rises

Neighborhood streets become crowded with excited children in costumes, many of whom may dart into the street unexpectedly. Drivers, meanwhile, encounter unfamiliar vehicles, decorations, and reduced visibility as dusk turns to night. The combination of more foot traffic and distracted drivers creates a perfect storm for accidents.

Key safety reminders

Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Chief Brian McClure emphasized a simple mantra: “See them. Be seen.” The department outlined several practical steps for both parents and motorists:

  • Dress children in reflective gear. Light‑colored or reflective costumes and accessories make kids more visible to drivers.
  • Use flashlights or glow sticks. A handheld light source helps drivers spot trick‑or‑treaters from a distance.
  • Stay on well‑lit streets. Encourage kids to walk on sidewalks and avoid shortcuts through dark alleys.
  • Accompany younger children. Parents or trusted adults should escort children under age 12.
  • Drive slowly and stay alert. Reduce speed in residential areas, watch for children crossing, and avoid distractions such as phones.
  • Obey traffic signals. Stop at stop signs and red lights, even if you see a group of costumed kids nearby.

Community involvement

Local businesses and neighborhood associations are also being asked to support the effort by posting reminder signs and ensuring sidewalks are clear of debris. The sheriff’s office will increase patrols in high‑traffic neighborhoods on October 31 to enforce traffic laws and assist families.

Parental guidance

Parents are urged to discuss safety plans with their children ahead of time. Setting a clear route, establishing a curfew, and reminding kids to look both ways before crossing are essential steps. The department also recommends that families consider a “buddy system” so children are not walking alone.

What to do in an emergency

If an accident occurs, call 911 immediately. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office advises staying at the scene, providing first aid if able, and cooperating fully with responding officers.

By following these guidelines, Evansville residents can help ensure that Halloween remains a fun, safe tradition for everyone. The sheriff’s office will continue to share updates and safety resources through its website and social‑media channels throughout the holiday weekend.
