On October 27, Walmart partnered with Care Access to open a new clinical trial center in Greater Houston, located at 3506 Hwy. 6 S. The ribbon‑cutting ceremony highlighted the community‑focused effort to bring research opportunities closer to families in the area.
How the center works
The facility contains five patient rooms where volunteers receive free health screenings for a range of conditions, including kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, lung disease and Alzheimer’s disease, according to Dr. Emily Aaronson, chief medical officer for Walmart. After a screening, Care Access reviews the results and notifies individuals whose health profiles match ongoing clinical trials.
Addressing a gap in research representation
Joseph Oh, senior vice president of marketing for Care Access, explained that the organization deliberately sought locations where clinical research options were scarce. “Clinical trials are a critical part of how we develop new treatments and medicines for the future and for everyone,” Oh said. “The problem ultimately is that there’s not enough representation in clinical trials.”
Regional expansion plans
Oh noted that similar centers already operate in Tyler, Texas, as well as in Georgia and Florida. Additional sites are slated to open in early to mid‑2027 in San Antonio, Texas, and in states such as Michigan and Nevada, expanding access for more Texans and Americans.
What this means for local families
For residents of Katy, Fort Bend County and the surrounding Greater Houston area, the new center offers a convenient, no‑cost way to learn about personal health status and potentially contribute to medical breakthroughs. By bringing clinical research to a familiar retail setting, Walmart and Care Access aim to lower barriers that have historically kept many families out of important studies.
Community response
Local leaders and health advocates praised the initiative as a step toward greater health equity. The center’s free screenings and streamlined trial enrollment process are expected to improve early detection of serious conditions and increase participation from diverse populations, which researchers say is essential for developing effective treatments.
Walmart plans to continue collaborating with health‑focused partners to expand similar services across the region, reinforcing its commitment to both community well‑being and the advancement of medical science.
