Spoken English Lets You Eat Well and Drink Late in Shaw

Spoken English is a late-night restaurant and wine bar in Shaw that operates on its own logic, and once you understand it, you’ll want to go back every week.

The place sits on the ground floor of the Line Hotel on 16th Street NW, but don’t let the hotel address fool you into expecting a stiff lobby bar. Spoken English runs on a communal-table format — long wooden tables where you sit next to strangers — and the menu is built around small plates that rotate constantly based on what chef Erik Bruner-Yang is working with. If you’ve eaten at his other spots, particularly Maketto on H Street, you already know he doesn’t do things the easy way.

The food here leans across Asia and Europe without committing to either. On a good night you might get silken tofu with something fermented and sharp, a grilled flatbread with herbs you have to ask about, or a bowl of something braised that has no business being that deep and complex. The menu changes enough that going twice in a month rarely means repeating yourself. That’s either exciting or frustrating depending on your personality — I find it exciting, though I’ve heard from friends who showed up specifically for a dish they’d loved and left a little deflated when it was gone.

The wine list is where this place really commits. It skews natural and low-intervention, which I know can make some people roll their eyes, but the pours here are chosen carefully and priced reasonably — you can drink well by the glass without working through a complicated list. The staff actually knows the wines, which matters more than it sounds.

Hours are the other thing to understand. Spoken English opens at 5 p.m. and stays open until midnight on weeknights, later on weekends. The kitchen keeps running. This is genuinely useful in a city where most kitchens close at ten and the late-night options collapse into bar food. If you’ve been at a show at the 9:30 Club or just lost track of time at a dinner party nearby, Spoken English is where you end up and feel glad about it.

Expect to spend somewhere around $60 to $80 per person with drinks, though it’s easy to spend less if you’re disciplined about it. The communal seating means you can show up alone or in a group and it works either way. I’ve gone by myself and eaten at the bar counter that overlooks the kitchen, which I’d actually recommend — you get a better sense of the pace of the place.

Shaw isn’t short on good restaurants, but Spoken English fills a specific gap: serious cooking, a thoughtful drink list, and hours that respect the fact that not everyone eats at seven. It draws a crowd that knows what it’s looking for, and the room has a low-key energy that doesn’t perform at you. That’s rarer than it should be.
