Patriots eye key upgrades at trade deadline to bolster run defense and line depth

The New England Patriots have battled a rash of injuries this season, especially at wide receiver and on the offensive line. Despite a 4‑3 record on a tough schedule, the team needs depth as the season reaches its midpoint.

Run defense needs a boost

Patriots’ run‑stuff rate sits 24th in the league, with middling rankings in rushing yards per play and EPA allowed. In potential AFC playoff matchups against teams with strong rushing attacks, stopping the run will be vital.

Potential nose‑tackle targets include Colts veteran Grover Stewart, a solid rental option, and former Titans star Jeffery Simmons, who earned a high run‑defense grade from Pro Football Focus. Arizona’s Roy Lopez and Tampa Bay’s A’Shawn Robinson are additional possibilities if their clubs are willing to part with them.

Guard depth is a pressing concern

Starting right guard Mike Onwenu is on injured reserve with a fractured ankle, and left guard Alijah Vera‑Tucker is also on IR after a hamstring setback. Backup guard Ben Brown recently returned from a knee injury, while Greg Van Roten remains on IR.

The trade market offers several options. Although eight‑time Pro Bowler Quenton Nelson was recently dealt to Seattle, other candidates include Washington’s Andrew Wylie (who can play both tackle and guard), Las Vegas’ Jackson Powers‑Johnson, and Tampa Bay’s Ben Bredeson.

Safety and cornerback depth

Safety duo Craig Woodson and Kevin Byard are solid starters, but depth behind them is thin. Recent acquisition Jaylen Reed has seen limited snaps. If the Colts hold a firesale, safety Cam Bynum could be a viable addition.

At cornerback, veteran Riq Woolen of the Eagles and Chargers’ Donte Jackson are potential trade targets, addressing recent injuries to key defensive backs.

Edge rush and pass rush options

Patriots rank 15th in pressure rate and 11th in sack percentage, but additional edge talent would strengthen the defense. While K’Lavon Chaisson of Washington may be available, the Chargers’ veteran Khalil Mack is also a candidate, offering experience despite a modest production of three sacks in six games.

Wide receiver depth

After trading a 2028 first‑round pick and a 2027 fifth‑rounder for A.J. Brown, the Patriots have limited cap space—about $1.5 million according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss. If injuries to the receiving corps persist, Colts wideout Josh Downs, a reliable route runner with a history alongside quarterback Drake Maye, could be considered.

Adding depth at any of these positions before the Nov. 10 deadline would give New England a better chance to reach the playoffs and make a deep run, while preserving the flexibility needed for future roster moves.
