Texarkana’s State Line Bar & Grill Sits in Two States at Once

The parking lot straddles the Arkansas-Texas state line, which is either a novelty or a mild legal headache depending on what you order. The State Line Bar & Grill has been sitting astride that invisible border for long enough that locals have mostly stopped finding it remarkable — which is, in its own way, remarkable. You walk in, you sit down, and somewhere under your feet the ground technically belongs to two different states. The bar itself splits the difference.

I went on a Wednesday around six, which is the right time to go if you want a seat without a wait and still want the room to feel alive. The building is older, not renovated-to-death older, just worn-in. Dark wood, neon beer signs, a jukebox that someone actually uses. The kind of place where the bartender knows three people at the bar by name before you finish your first drink.

The menu is bar food done without pretense. Burgers, sandwiches, wings, a few baskets of fried things. The burger I got — a double with grilled onions and pepper jack — was the kind of burger that doesn’t photograph well and tastes exactly right. The bun held together. The patty had some char. Nothing on the menu is going to change your life, but that’s not the point. The point is that it’s real food at a real price, which in this case means you can eat and drink without spending more than fifteen or twenty dollars if you exercise any restraint at all.

The wings deserve a mention. They come out properly crisped, not the rubbery kind you get when they’ve been sitting in sauce too long. I went with a dry rub, which was the right call. The ranch dressing they serve with them is house-made, or at least that’s what it tastes like — thicker and more garlicky than the bottled stuff most places use.

The beer selection is mostly domestic, with a couple of Texas craft options rotating on tap. Nobody’s going to hand you a four-panel menu of sour ales here. You point at the tap, they pull it, you drink it. That simplicity is part of why people keep coming back.

What makes the State Line Bar & Grill worth an hour of your time isn’t the novelty of the state line thing, though that does come up in conversation. It’s that the place functions as a neighborhood bar in a city that doesn’t have an overabundance of honest-to-goodness neighborhood bars. The people who show up on weeknights aren’t there to be seen. They’re there because they live nearby, they’re hungry, they don’t want to cook, and they know the beer will be cold.

Friday and Saturday nights get louder and more crowded. There’s occasional live music, though the schedule is irregular enough that you’d want to call ahead or check their Facebook before making it the whole plan. Weeknights are more relaxed. If you’re driving in from out of town, the address lands you on State Line Avenue, which is the main drag connecting Texarkana’s two halves. You can’t really miss it.

It won’t make any best-of lists. It doesn’t need to.
