Sandfly BBQ Is Worth the Drive Off the Tourist Track

My neighbor grew up on the south side and has been telling me to get to Sandfly BBQ for two years. I kept putting it off — it’s not downtown, it’s not on any square, and nobody’s handing you a flyer for it on River Street. Finally went on a Tuesday night, and now I feel like I wasted two years.

Sandfly sits out on Ferguson Avenue, southeast of downtown near the Sandfly community — one of those old Savannah neighborhoods that most visitors never see. The building is modest, the parking lot fills up fast, and the line at the counter moves at its own pace. That’s fine. You’re not in a hurry.

The food is low-country Georgia barbecue with no identity crisis. Pork is the main event: pulled, sliced, or chopped, and smoked long enough that it falls apart without any help. I got the pulled pork plate with collard greens and mac and cheese, and I can tell you the collards alone — slow-cooked with smoked meat, properly seasoned — would justify the trip. The mac and cheese is baked, not soupy, and has that slightly crispy top layer that signals someone was paying attention. Plates run roughly $12–16 depending on what you order, which feels like a fair deal in 2024.

The ribs get a lot of attention online, and they deserve it, but I’d push back on the idea that you have to get ribs to have the full experience. The smoked chicken is underrated — the skin has actual texture, which is harder to pull off than people realize. Get a half chicken if you’re going alone; get a full one if you’re sharing and know what you’re doing.

Sauce here is on the side, vinegar-forward with a little heat. You’ll use it, but you won’t need it as a cover-up the way you sometimes do at places where the smoke isn’t quite doing its job.

The interior is casual and unpretentious — booths, a counter, a few tables, local crowd that clearly comes here regularly. Nobody’s performing anything. On the weekends it gets packed, so a weekday lunch or early dinner is the move if you don’t like waiting. They do close when they sell out, which happens, so don’t push your luck by showing up at 7:30 on a Friday expecting a full menu.

One more thing: the banana pudding. It’s the real kind — layered with actual vanilla wafers that have softened into the pudding overnight, not something premade out of a bucket. Get it even if you think you’re too full. Especially if you think you’re too full.

Sandfly BBQ doesn’t have a PR strategy or a cocktail program or a patio with string lights. What it has is good smoked meat at honest prices and a clientele that’s been coming back for years because there’s no reason not to. That’s enough. That’s more than enough.
