Silver Creek Café Earns Its Regulars One Plate at a Time

Silver Creek Café has been open on South Broadway since the early 2000s, and for most of that time it has operated without much fanfare — no food blog buzz, no viral moment, no line out the door. What it does have is a parking lot that fills up fast on weekend mornings, which is usually a more reliable signal than any review.

The café sits in a low-profile strip along South Broadway, south of downtown and close to the Mayo Clinic’s Saint Marys campus. It’s a short drive from the medical district, which partly explains the clientele: nurses finishing overnight shifts, families visiting patients who need a real meal, and a steady local crowd that’s been coming in long enough to know the staff by name.

The menu is American diner-style, executed more carefully than the format usually promises. Breakfast runs all day, which matters because the eggs Benedict here — with Canadian bacon and a house hollandaise that isn’t gluey or overdone — is genuinely worth ordering at 2 p.m. if that’s when you get there. The omelets are large and stuffed without being sloppy. The hash browns come out properly crisped. These details seem obvious but they aren’t, and Silver Creek gets them right with some consistency.

For lunch, the burgers are a safe call — the patties are thicker than fast-casual, cooked to order, and the fries arrive hot. The club sandwich is a reliable choice if you’re feeding someone who’s not sure what they want. Soups rotate daily and are usually housemade; the chicken wild rice shows up often and it’s exactly what you’d want on a cold day in January.

Prices are reasonable without being remarkable. Breakfast plates generally run $10–$14, burgers a bit more. Coffee refills come without asking. The dining room is comfortable and plain — booths, good light from the windows, nothing trying too hard. It seats a fair number of people without feeling cavernous.

Service can stretch on busy Saturday mornings, so if you’re going between 9 and 11 a.m. on a weekend, expect a short wait for a table and maybe a slightly longer one for your food. That’s not a complaint worth dwelling on — it means other people know about this place. Weekday mornings are notably calmer and the kitchen moves faster.

There’s no dedicated website to speak of, and the café doesn’t do much on social media. Yelp and Google reviews fill in the gaps if you want to check current hours, which have shifted over the years. Generally they open early and close by mid-afternoon, so this is a morning and midday destination, not a dinner spot.

What makes Silver Creek worth knowing about is that it does exactly what it says it will do, without drift. The food is honest, the portions are right-sized, and the room feels like it belongs to the neighborhood rather than to a concept. In a city where a lot of the dining conversation circles around the Mayo-adjacent hospitality corridor, a place that simply feeds people well and stays out of its own way deserves some attention.
