North Texas sees rise in flu cases; doctors urge vaccinations ahead of holidays

Children’s Health has confirmed a noticeable surge in influenza cases throughout North Texas as the region moves deeper into flu season. Hospitals and clinics from Dallas to Fort Worth are reporting higher numbers of patients presenting with classic flu symptoms.

Case numbers climb quickly

The agency recorded roughly 100 flu cases in the first week of October, and that figure rose to 136 the following week. The upward trend suggests the virus is spreading rapidly as temperatures drop.

Doctors warn of severe symptoms

“What’s really stood out to me with these cases of flu that we’re seeing is the severity of symptoms,” said Dr. Zachary Stone, a pediatrician at Children’s Health. “We’re seeing very high fevers; we’re seeing a lot of fatigue.” Dr. Stone cautioned that the combination of colder weather and increased indoor gatherings could further amplify disease spread.

Flu shots recommended before holiday travel

In response to the rising numbers, Dr. Stone strongly advocated for flu vaccinations ahead of upcoming holiday gatherings. “That leads to higher disease spread activity. Couple that with the rise in case numbers that we’re seeing these past few weeks, and that’s only going to exacerbate disease spread,” he explained. He emphasized that getting vaccinated now can protect families and reduce the likelihood of severe illness during the busy travel season.

Myths about the flu vaccine debunked

Addressing a common misconception, Dr. Stone clarified that the flu injection cannot cause the flu. “The flu injection is an inactive vaccine, so it cannot give you that flu. So we should not have that concern,” he said. This reassurance aims to encourage hesitant parents to vaccinate their children without fear of contracting the illness from the shot itself.

How to get vaccinated

Flu shots are widely available at pediatric offices, pharmacies, and community health clinics across the Dallas‑Fort Worth metroplex. Residents are encouraged to schedule appointments promptly, as supply can become limited later in the season. For families without insurance, many locations offer the vaccine at reduced cost or free of charge.

Protecting the community

Health officials stress that widespread vaccination not only safeguards individual families but also helps protect vulnerable community members, such as the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. By reducing overall transmission, the region can avoid a potentially overwhelming surge in hospitalizations during the holiday period.

As flu season intensifies, the message from Children’s Health remains clear: get the flu shot, practice good hygiene, and stay home if you feel ill. These simple steps can keep North Texas healthier throughout the colder months.
