Springfield School Board hires national firm to lead permanent superintendent search

At its October 26 meeting, the Springfield Board of Education voted unanimously to contract Human Capital Enterprises, a national school‑leadership search firm, to conduct a comprehensive search for a permanent superintendent. The decision follows the board’s appointment of Shawn Stover as interim superintendent earlier this year.

Search contract details

Human Capital Enterprises has previously assisted districts such as Bethel and Eugene 4J. The firm’s base fee for a full search is $31,000, with optional services that could add up to $6,200 if the board approves them. By contrast, the district paid $15,736 in the spring to Grundmeyer Leader Services for the interim superintendent search.

Board concerns and priorities

Board members expressed mixed feelings about the cost and the possibility that Stover could be promoted to the permanent role. “I’m leaning more into the fact that we’re likely going to go through this process fully,” said board member Matthew Brandt. “It’s important that the public be involved and having a company help facilitate that will take pressure off the board and the administration.”

During the same meeting, the board revisited its top priorities for the 2026‑27 school year, emphasizing increased transparency in elementary curriculum and student‑discipline policies, gathering feedback from parents, staff and students, and establishing a facilities planning committee to address vacant land use and future building needs.

Budget anxieties and facilities planning

Board members voiced anxiety over anticipated budget cuts for the 2027‑28 fiscal year and the upcoming 2027 state legislative session that will determine public‑school funding. Chair Jonathan Light stressed the need for facility‑related data to present to legislators, while Bob Brew warned that the board’s expanding agenda risked becoming “scope creep,” stretching a simple task into a multi‑year process.

Stover, who aligns himself with the board’s stated priorities, cautioned that some processes—such as selling land—may require additional time to avoid legal challenges. He also noted that the district is hiring FLO Analytics to update enrollment projections originally produced three years ago.

Next steps

The board has not yet released a public timeline for the superintendent search. Members hope the facilities committee, proposed as a superintendent’s advisory group, will deliver recommendations in time to inform the 2027‑28 budget. The committee’s meetings would not be required to be open to the public, a model previously used by the Bethel School District.

As Springfield educators and families await further details, the board’s focus on transparency, parental input and prudent fiscal planning reflects a commitment to maintaining strong schools amid uncertain funding.
