Serda’s Coffee Has Company on St. Francis Street

The building at 26 N. Royal Street has a pressed-tin ceiling and the kind of light that comes through old glass—wavy, a little soft. Most people walking past assume it’s been there forever, which is mostly true. The Chasers bar crowd and the lunch regulars at nearby spots tend to pass it without stopping. That’s their loss, because inside you’ll find one of the more quietly serious coffee programs in coastal Alabama.

Serda’s Coffee Co. has two locations in Mobile, but the Royal Street spot is the one worth making a point of visiting. It sits just off Dauphin, a block from the commercial noise of the main drag, in a stretch of downtown that still feels like it’s figuring out what it wants to be. The café occupies the ground floor of a historic building, high ceilings, exposed brick on one wall, a bar up front where the espresso machine gets real use.

The coffee itself is sourced and roasted with more attention than the storefront suggests. Their single-origin offerings rotate, and the baristas actually know what’s on the board—where the bean came from, what the roast profile is doing. Order an Americano or a pour-over if you want to taste what they’re working with. The lattes are well-made, not oversweetened. The cold brew is strong enough that you should probably think about whether you actually want a second one before you order it.

Food is simple and honest: pastries from local bakers, a few sandwiches, nothing that tries too hard. Come morning, the almond croissant goes fast. By midday the crowd shifts from laptop workers and downtown office staff to people grabbing something before a meeting at one of the nearby law firms or civic offices. The space accommodates both without feeling split between them.

Pricing is straightforward—drip coffee runs around three dollars, espresso drinks land between four and six, nothing is going to shock you. They take cards, keep reasonable hours through the week, and close earlier on weekends than you’d expect, so check before you make the trip on a Sunday afternoon.

What sets Serda’s apart from the average downtown café isn’t any single thing. It’s the cumulative effect of a place that takes its product seriously without making a performance of it. The staff isn’t trying to educate you; they’re just good at what they do. The room is comfortable without being curated to within an inch of its life. You can sit at a corner table for an hour and nobody’s going to hover.

Mobile has a real café culture that doesn’t always get acknowledged. Between the drive-throughs and the chain locations out on Airport Boulevard, it’s easy to forget that the older part of the city has places worth sitting in. Serda’s on Royal is one of them. The pressed-tin ceiling helps, but it’s the coffee that keeps people coming back.
