Tyler residents saw a solemn procession on Saturday as Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Adam Sherifi was honored after being shot in a shootout while serving a warrant last week. The tribute underscores the close ties between Tyler and surrounding communities, where law‑enforcement officers routinely assist one another across county lines.
According to KLTV, the procession began at the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office at 2355 N. Stemmons Freeway and traveled to Eubank Funeral Home at 27532 State Highway 64 in Canton. The route allowed citizens from multiple towns, including Tyler, to pay respects to the fallen deputy.
First‑responder Ryan Cooley, who worked with Sherifi on accidents along Highway 64, said he had known the deputy for a couple of years. “Adam was a great officer,” Cooley told KLTV. “He fought hard for all of us. He worked side by side with us.” Cooley added that Sherifi’s presence could lift spirits even in the toughest situations, noting that he responded to a structure fire Monday morning before attending the procession. “We still have a job to do,” Cooley said, emphasizing the continued commitment of first‑responders.
Long‑time Canton resident Emily Paul, who has lived in the area for roughly 33‑35 years, recalled meeting Sherifi at the sheriff’s department and described him as “just nice” and “a good guy.” She highlighted the importance of community support for law‑enforcement, firefighters and EMTs who risk their lives daily. Paul also noted that, despite rivalries between towns in Van Zandt County, “the rivalry is only on the football field,” underscoring a shared respect for public servants.
Fundraising efforts have been organized to aid Sherifi’s family. KLTV reported a Hog Fest in Ben Wheeler, a barbecue fundraiser in Van, and a donation account set up at Texas Bank and Trust under Sherifi’s name. These events have drawn participants from Tyler and neighboring areas, reflecting a regional commitment to the deputy’s loved ones.
While no specific future ceremony was announced, community members say the support will continue as the family navigates this loss. Residents are encouraged to contribute to the donation account or attend upcoming fundraisers to help the Sherifi family during this difficult time.
