Ravenswood Hosts Community Free-Cycle Event for Neighbors

Ravenswood residents will have the opportunity to participate in the neighborhood’s largest Free-Cycle event to date, taking place this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, organized by the Ravenswood Neighbors Association, encourages the community to come together and share items such as clothes, kitchen tools, electronics, books, and furniture, all free of charge.

Community Spirit and Sustainability

Launched in 2021, the Ravenswood Front Yard Free-Cycle aims to foster a sense of community while promoting sustainability by keeping usable items out of landfills. This initiative has grown each year, replacing the traditional garage sale format with a more socially distanced and money-free exchange.

Michael Sewall, president of the Ravenswood Neighbors Association, highlighted the event’s success in building community bonds. “Coming out of the pandemic, we regrouped and thought about what truly builds community,” Sewall said. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and it aligns with our neighborhood’s ethos of sharing and giving.”

Partnerships and Additional Opportunities

The event is organized in collaboration with Ravenswood Free Box, a Facebook group dedicated to sharing free items year-round. Additionally, those unable to participate on Saturday can drop off donations at the Chicago Northside Church of the Nazarene on Thursday and Friday.

This year, the event has partnered with Cradles to Crayons, a nonprofit supporting children in low-income or homeless situations. Donations of clothes, shoes, diapers, and school supplies can be made at designated drop-off points throughout the weekend.

Supporting Local Businesses

Coinciding with the Free-Cycle, the Greater Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce is hosting the third annual Ravenswood Sidewalk Sale, featuring over 30 local businesses. This event offers open-air shopping along Montrose, Damen, Lawrence, and Ravenswood avenues, providing an opportunity for attendees to support local commerce while enjoying the community atmosphere.

With over 1,000 attendees last year, the Free-Cycle is expected to draw significant foot traffic, benefiting both residents and local businesses. The Ravenswood Neighbors Association will have a tent set up outside Hazel, where community members can learn more about the association and purchase neighborhood merchandise.
