Washington GOP Chair Calls 400 Suspected Illegal Voter Cases Just the Tip of the Iceberg

Washington state is at the center of a new federal investigation into suspected illegal immigrant voting. Federal officials disclosed that more than 400 ballots have been identified as possibly cast by individuals who were not U.S. citizens, and they warned that this sample likely represents a much larger issue.

Federal officials seek state cooperation

Acting U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd told reporters that the Justice Department is asking Washington election officials to set aside the questioned ballots until their legality can be confirmed. Floyd said the department expects to provide an additional list of suspected illegal voters before the upcoming midterm election.

“This is not the full number of illegal immigrants who have been voting in Washington. With a small sample we collected so far, I am confident we are looking at thousands of illegal immigrants who have been voting in Washington,” Floyd said.

State officials push back

Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs responded that the state takes voter‑information security seriously and will only act on requests that follow due process. Hobbs reiterated that cases of voter fraud, including illegal‑immigrant voting, are “incredibly rare” and that every voter signs a declaration of eligibility on the ballot envelope.

Secretary Hobbs’ office also emphasized its priority to protect Washington citizens’ right to vote and to keep private voter information confidential.

Republican leaders accuse state of stonewalling

Washington GOP Chairman Jim Walsh, a Republican from Aberdeen, told The Center Square that the 400‑plus cases identified by the DOJ are “likely the very tip of the iceberg.” Walsh criticized state leaders, including Governor Jay Inslee, Attorney General Bob Ferguson and Secretary of State Hobbs, for refusing to cooperate with federal election law, saying they “know they have a problem.”

“They pointed out that the lack of compliance on the part of Washington state elected officials with federal election law is making it harder to do these investigations,” Walsh said. “That’s why Washington elected officials are refusing to cooperate and comply with federal election law, just because they know they’ve got a problem.”

Democratic Party pushes back on the narrative

Washington Democratic State Party Chair Shasti Conrad called the federal effort an attempt by the Trump‑Vance administration to undermine the integrity of the upcoming election. Conrad said Washington has “the best elections system in the country” and accused the administration of trying to “disenfranchise eligible voters” and “intimidate” the state.

She added that the timing of the announcement, just a week before the midterms, was an effort to distract from “the chaos and corruption of the Trump‑Vance administration at the ballot drop box.”

What the numbers could mean

While the DOJ has not released a final tally, Floyd’s comments suggest that the 400‑plus suspected illegal‑immigrant ballots may represent a much larger pattern of non‑citizen voting. The federal government has warned that illegal voting can carry felony penalties, including up to five years in federal prison.

State officials, however, maintain that the overall incidence of illegal voting remains low and that Washington’s voter rolls are secure.

Implications for the upcoming midterms

The dispute highlights a broader clash between federal election enforcement and state autonomy. Republicans argue that the federal government is simply enforcing the law to protect the integrity of elections, while Democrats view the move as partisan interference.

As the midterm election approaches, Washington voters and officials will be watching closely to see whether additional lists of suspected illegal voters are released and how the state will respond.

Looking ahead

The Justice Department has indicated it will continue to investigate and provide further data before Election Day. Washington’s GOP leadership says they will keep pressing for full cooperation, while state officials say they will act only within the bounds of due process and existing state law.
