Fitch upgrades Louisiana to AA rating, saving taxpayers on bond interest

Fitch Ratings announced on Friday that Louisiana’s credit rating has been upgraded from “AA‑” to “AA.” The agency said the boost reflects the state’s successful implementation of the 2024 revenue policy changes championed by Governor Jeff Landry and the Louisiana Legislature.

Tax reforms at the heart of the upgrade

Landry and lawmakers averted a looming budget shortfall by cancelling an automatic sales‑tax cut slated for 2025 and instead raising the sales‑tax rate to offset a new income‑tax reduction. The additional revenue, combined with the re‑allocation of funds previously earmarked for major transportation projects to cover health‑care and higher‑education expenses, helped close a projected structural gap in the state’s finances.

What the higher rating means for Louisiana families

With an AA rating, the state can borrow at lower interest rates, translating into direct savings for taxpayers. Those savings are expected to flow into critical infrastructure projects such as road repairs, school construction and hospital upgrades, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to strong, family‑focused communities.

State leaders celebrate the milestone

State Treasurer John Fleming, R‑Minden, called the rating improvement a cause for celebration, noting that “we must continue building on this progress to ensure that Louisiana’s finances remain strong for years to come.” Senate President Cameron Henry, R‑Metairie, and House Speaker Philip DeVillier, R‑Eunice, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the legislature will keep working toward long‑term fiscal stability.

Future challenges and the need for vigilance

Fitch warned that a reversal of the new tax policies—such as a future sales‑tax cut—could trigger a downgrade. The agency also cited slow economic growth and the planned partial rollback of the 2024 sales‑tax increase as potential constraints on long‑term revenue growth. State officials say they remain vigilant, ready to adjust policies if needed to protect the credit rating.

Why this matters to everyday Louisianans

Lower borrowing costs mean more money stays in the hands of families and businesses rather than being spent on interest payments. The upgrade validates Governor Landry’s fiscal strategy, which prioritizes responsible budgeting, reduced deficits and the preservation of essential services for parents, children and seniors across the state.

As Louisiana moves forward, the administration’s focus on sound fiscal policy and prudent tax reforms is expected to keep the state’s credit strong, ensuring that future generations inherit a financially stable and prosperous Louisiana.
