Reno‑based 10 Torr Distilling & Brewing is putting a local hero on a bottle. On Nov. 6 the distillery will unveil a limited‑edition “Whiskey Business” label that features K9 Ava, a retired police dog from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office. Each bottle will sell for $60, and $5 of every sale is earmarked for Washoe County K9 Partners, the nonprofit that backs canine programs for both the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and the Reno Police Department.
Supporting the community’s four‑legged officers
Washoe County K9 Partners provides the funding needed for training, specialized equipment and veterinary care for the department’s working dogs. By directing a portion of the whiskey proceeds to the organization, 10 Torr hopes to give back to the brave animals and the handlers who rely on them daily.
“We’ve seen these K9 teams in action, and it’s hard not to be amazed by these dogs and the bond they share with their handlers,” said Jamie Evans, CEO of 10 Torr Distilling & Brewing. “They give so much to our community, and we’re proud to give a little back, with our customers right there alongside us.”
From rum to whiskey – a proven fundraiser
The whiskey follows a successful fundraiser from last year that featured K9 Jett. That campaign, titled “Rum With the Big Dogs,” sold out quickly, with all proceeds also flowing to the K9 Partners program. This year the distillery is swapping rum for whiskey while keeping the focus squarely on the dogs and the people who work alongside them.
The release party will take place at 10 Torr’s tasting room, located at 490 Mill St., at 6 p.m. on Nov. 6. Attendees will be able to sample the new spirit, which the distillery describes as having notes of cherry cola, black pepper and leather. Bottles will be sold on a first‑come, first‑served basis while supplies last.
Why local businesses are stepping up
In recent years, Reno’s small‑business community has increasingly partnered with nonprofit groups to support public‑safety initiatives. Projects like this one reinforce the idea that thriving local enterprises can play a direct role in strengthening the safety and well‑being of the neighborhoods they serve. By linking a popular product with a cause that resonates with residents, 10 Torr is demonstrating how entrepreneurship and community service can work hand‑in‑hand.
Washoe County K9 Partners welcomes the additional funding, noting that every dollar helps maintain the high standards of training and care that keep the dogs ready for duty. As the partnership continues, the organization hopes to expand its outreach to more law‑enforcement agencies throughout the region.
How to get involved
Anyone interested in supporting the cause can purchase a bottle at the tasting room on release night or later, while inventory remains. The $5 contribution per bottle will be transferred directly to the K9 Partners program, ensuring that the money goes straight to the dogs’ training, gear and medical expenses.
