Rutabaga Paddlesports in Fitchburg to Close Doors This December

Fitchburg, Wis. – Rutabega Paddlesports, a family‑owned paddle‑sports shop located at 2620 Rimrock Road, announced it will close permanently in December after owners Darren and Stephanie Bush were unable to secure a new buyer.

Owners cite market pressures

“I tried for a year to find the right buyer, including exploring a purchase by some of our own staff who were interested,” Darren Bush said. “But in the end, financial realities have to be faced.” The Bush family has been operating the store for several years, building a reputation for personalized service, expertise, and the ability for customers to try equipment before purchasing.

Bush acknowledged the broader challenges facing traditional retail, noting the rise of online giants such as Amazon and the fact that many vendors now sell directly to consumers. “This is a tough time for traditional retail. We face increasingly stiff competition from online giants while also competing with our own vendors,” he explained. “It’s a difficult environment for a specialty retailer that has built its reputation on service, expertise and the opportunity to try before you buy.”

Staff transition to local boat rentals

While the storefront will close, the Bush family confirmed that many employees have already secured positions with Olbrich Park Boat Rentals and Outdoor Recreation for the 2027 season. “We provide a great service for east‑side residents, giving people a place to rent boats, get out on the water and take classes at every age and experience level,” Bush said. “We’ll continue to do that.”

Liquidation sale begins Friday

Customers can take advantage of a liquidation sale starting Friday, with options to shop in‑store, online at rutabagashop.com, or by phone at 608‑223‑9300. The sale will feature discounted paddleboards, kayaks, accessories, and apparel.

Impact on the local community

Rutabega Paddlesports has been a hub for water‑sport enthusiasts in the Madison area, offering classes, equipment rentals, and expert advice. Local paddlers expressed disappointment at the loss but praised the owners for ensuring staff continuity and maintaining a presence in the community through the boat‑rental partnership.

“I’ve learned so much from the team at Rutabega,” said longtime customer Jenna Miller. “It’s sad to see the shop close, but I’m glad the staff will still be out on the water serving us.”

Looking ahead

The closure underscores the challenges faced by niche brick‑and‑mortar retailers in an increasingly digital marketplace. Nevertheless, the Bush family’s proactive approach to staff placement demonstrates a commitment to the local economy and to preserving access to water‑recreation opportunities for Madison residents.
