Texas community honors fallen soldier as U.S. warns of Iranian assassination plots

Dallas officials and Rep. Brandon Gill (R‑TX) gathered on Tuesday to honor Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, who was killed on July 17 during an enemy attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. Gonzales, a member of the Army’s 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, was serving in Operation Inherent Resolve, a mission separate from the Pentagon’s Operation Epic Fury.

Intelligence warning of Iranian plots

U.S. intelligence officials say Iran has intensified efforts to assassinate American citizens overseas. Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton sent an unclassified memorandum to Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Oct. 23, stating that “lethal plotting efforts by the Iranians against U.S. citizens have reached advanced stages in both the Middle East and certain other countries.” The memo, obtained by Axios and reviewed by Reuters, did not specify the number of plots, the intended victims, or the countries outside the Middle East that may be involved.

Clayton offered to downgrade the classification of additional intelligence so more State Department personnel could receive the information, though the underlying intelligence has not been released publicly.

Pentagon casualty figures

Operation Epic Fury, launched on Feb. 28, has resulted in 21 American service‑member deaths and 865 wounded personnel, according to Pentagon records as of Oct. 23. The operation’s casualty list includes 15 deaths classified as follows: eight Army deaths (seven hostile, one illness/injury), six Air Force deaths (all accidents) and one Navy death (undetermined). A separate overseas‑operations category beginning July 7 adds six more deaths (five Army, one Navy), four of which are hostile.

In addition to Gonzales, the attack that killed her also claimed the lives of 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Hawaii, and Sgt. Angel Rampersad, 28, of New York. Rampersad was initially listed as missing before her remains were identified.

British investigation linked to Iran

British prosecutors charged two men, Mohmed Ahmad Abdulkarim and Nouman Essghir, both 24, under the National Security Act for alleged assistance to a foreign intelligence service—believed to be Iranian—related to activity at RAF Fairford, a Gloucestershire air base used by U.S. aircraft. The investigation began after suspicious vehicles were reported near the base on Sept. 27. Police recovered gasoline but found no explosive devices.

Both defendants are scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Oct. 27. British authorities have not confirmed that the charges are directly tied to the assassination threats outlined in Clayton’s memorandum.

Impact on U.S. diplomatic and military personnel

The State Department’s worldwide security advisory warns that Iran and its proxies may target American interests abroad, including businesses and diplomatic facilities. Nonessential personnel and eligible family members have been ordered to leave U.S. diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia, with reduced staffing at embassies in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

While the warning focuses on overseas threats, Iranian‑linked assassination plotting on U.S. soil is not unprecedented. In March, a federal jury convicted Pakistani national Asif Merchant, who had been trained by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, of murder‑for‑hire and attempted terrorism, acknowledging that the IRGC had sent him to the United States in 2024 to arrange political assassinations.

Local response

Carrollton City Council later honored Gonzales with a formal resolution, and community members organized an honor ride and vigil to remember her sacrifice. Rep. Brandon Gill also paid tribute during an event in Flower Mound, underscoring the deep ties between Texas families and the nation’s service members.

U.S. intelligence officials continue to share threat information with personnel potentially at risk, while the Pentagon has not disclosed all security measures employed at military installations.
