Haunted Double Eagle Restaurant in Old Mesilla Draws Curious Visitors

Old Mesilla’s Double Eagle restaurant, a landmark steeped in local legend, remains a magnet for both diners and ghost‑hunters. The eatery’s most famous tale dates back to the 1800s, when Armando, the son of a wealthy family, fell in love with Inez, a servant in the household. Their romance ended in bloodshed after Armando’s mother discovered the affair, violently attacking Inez and inadvertently stabbing her son. Both lovers perished, and according to long‑standing folklore, their spirits linger in the home.

The Carlotta Room

Armando’s former bedroom, now marketed as the Carlotta Room, is the centerpiece of the hauntings. Guests who sit in the two antique armchairs often report vivid dreams about the tragic couple. Bartender Christian Kilgore, who has worked at the Double Eagle for several years, says he has personally experienced a series of unexplained phenomena.

First‑hand Accounts

“When I first started busing, I would set a table, turn around for a second to grab another setting, and when I turned back the napkin was popped out and the silverware had been rearranged,” Kilgore recalled. He also described hearing his name called from empty corners, feeling light taps on his shoulder, and witnessing objects shift without any visible cause.

Lighting anomalies add to the eerie atmosphere. “The lights will flicker on me, not just a little bit, not just a murmur or a tremor because the electricity is very good,” Kilgore explained, noting that the flickering seems to have no electrical explanation.

Security Camera Capture

During a recent visit by a local reporter, the restaurant’s security camera recorded a strange visual. “You can see a depression in the… I told you that they do that,” Kilgore said, referring to an unexplained distortion captured on video. The cause of the flickering lights and the camera anomaly remains unknown, leaving both staff and visitors puzzled.

Local Reaction

While some dismiss the reports as folklore, many patrons embrace the mystery. “Whenever you are unfamiliar with something or you do not fully believe it, it is always good to test it for yourself,” Kilgore advised, encouraging visitors to experience the Carlotta Room firsthand.

Whether one is a skeptic or a believer, the Double Eagle offers more than just a meal; it provides a tangible connection to Old Mesilla’s historic past. The restaurant remains open to the public, inviting locals and tourists alike to explore its storied walls and perhaps encounter a lingering whisper from the past.
