Stonegate Coffee Is Gone. Renton’s La Paloma Fills the Gap

La Paloma Bakery & Cafe sits on South Third Street in downtown Renton, and on any given weekday morning the line starts before the glass case is fully stocked. That case is the reason people come back: pan dulce arranged by color and shape, conchas in pink and white, cuernos glazed with sugar, empanadas still warm from the oven, and a rotating selection of cakes that changes depending on what the kitchen felt like making that day.

The shop is small. Six or seven tables, walls painted in warm ochre, a counter that forces a certain intimacy between customers and the woman taking orders. Spanish runs alongside English without pause or self-consciousness. The clientele is a cross-section of South Renton’s working neighborhood — construction crews grabbing coffee and a couple of conchas before seven, older women with canvas bags who arrive at eight and take their time, the occasional office worker making the detour downtown instead of hitting a drive-through on Rainier.

What does it cost? A concha runs around a dollar fifty, sometimes two dollars for the larger ones. A slice of tres leches cake is four or five dollars. Coffee — drip, horchata, or café de olla — stays under four. For a full breakfast, the huevos rancheros plate runs about ten dollars and comes with rice, beans, and handmade tortillas that are the real point of the dish. The tortillas alone justify the walk from wherever the nearest parking spot happened to be.

The cafe doesn’t advertise much. There’s an Instagram account that gets updated sporadically with photos of whatever special came out of the oven, and word of mouth has done the rest. On weekends the pastry case sells out faster. Arriving after ten on a Saturday means the best conchas are gone and the remaining selection, while still good, carries a certain deflation. Regulars know to come early or call ahead on Fridays to ask about weekend specials.

Downtown Renton has been through cycles of disinvestment and renewal, and South Third in particular has the feel of a block still deciding what it wants to be. La Paloma doesn’t seem concerned with any of that. The lights come on early, the ovens run hot, and the same recipes that the owner learned growing up in Oaxaca are what come out of the kitchen every morning. There’s a framed photo near the register — a family gathering, plates of food on a long table, people mid-laugh — that tells most of the story without any caption needed.

For anyone who’s spent time in Mexican bakeries in Seattle’s Beacon Hill or White Center and wondered why Renton didn’t have something comparable closer to the valley floor, La Paloma is the answer that arrived quietly and stayed. It doesn’t need a marquee. The smell of fresh pan dulce carries far enough down the sidewalk to do the advertising on its own.
