Richardson residents will soon have a state‑of‑the‑art performance venue on their doorstep as the University of Texas at Dallas prepares to open a new concert hall in spring 2027. The $10 million donation from the Harry W. Bass Jr. Foundation is funding a 67,000‑square‑foot building that will house the Harry W. Bass Jr. Foundation Concert Hall, a 680‑seat venue with a vineyard‑style configuration, according to Community Impact.
The facility is the second phase of the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum project, which aims to create a 12‑acre arts and culture district on campus. Phase one, opened in 2024, introduced the UT Dallas Art Museums, a second location of the Trammell and Margaret Crow Museum of Asian Art, and the Brettell Reading Room.
In addition to the concert hall, the new building will include rehearsal spaces, a percussion studio, classrooms, a recording studio, and student study areas. Bass Foundation trustee Michael Calhoun said the project “will reach youth, expose them to new ideas, and help them learn and thrive,” highlighting the broader community benefit beyond the university.
Dean Nils Roemer of the Bass School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology emphasized that the hall will provide a “world‑class stage” for student performers and faculty, allowing them to sound “as good as they can be.” He added that Richardson neighbors “may not need to go downtown; they can experience the best of arts and culture right here on campus,” underscoring the venue’s potential to enrich local cultural life.
The Bass Foundation’s support builds on a prior $40 million gift in 2023, which helped launch the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology. Roemer noted that the Bass name symbolizes “support for ambition, creativity and the best of arts and culture,” and expressed hope that generations of students will benefit from the foundation’s generosity.
Public concerts and programs are planned for the new hall, offering Richardson residents additional cultural options without traveling downtown. The venue’s design, with audience members surrounding a central stage, promises an intimate concert experience.
What’s next: Construction is nearing completion, and the university expects to hold a grand opening in spring 2027. Community members can look forward to a schedule of university and public events once the hall opens, further integrating the campus arts district into Richardson’s cultural landscape.
