Ghent’s H&H Pawn Has More Character Than Most Museums

What exactly do you do with a stuffed elk head, a 1940s accordion, three electric guitars in varying states of dignity, and a display case full of vintage pocket watches — all before noon on a Tuesday? If you’re at H&H Pawn on Colley Avenue in Ghent, you browse, mostly. Maybe you buy something. Either way, you leave having learned something you didn’t expect to.

H&H has been operating in this neighborhood long enough that it barely needs to advertise. It sits on Colley in the kind of building that looks like it has opinions — brick-fronted, a little worn, utterly unbothered by the gastropubs and yoga studios that have colonized the surrounding blocks. Walk in and the first thing you notice is that it smells like old electronics and furniture polish, which is either off-putting or clarifying depending on your relationship with clutter.

The inventory turns constantly, which is half the point. Norfolk has a large military population and plenty of transient residents — people who need quick cash or are moving across the country and can’t take the amp with them. That churn means H&H gets genuinely interesting stuff on a rotating basis: saxophones, vintage cameras, firearms (they’re a licensed dealer), jewelry, tools, stereo equipment from eras when stereo equipment was built to outlast the owners. You’re not going to find curated vintage at boutique prices. You’re going to find things that were owned by actual people, priced accordingly.

The jewelry case is worth a real look if you have patience. There’s usually a mix of gold chains, estate rings, and watches — Seikos, the occasional Bulova, sometimes something more interesting — and the staff will tell you what they know about provenance without overselling it. That honesty is more useful than you’d think. They’re not there to convince you anything is rare. If it’s rare, it’ll be priced like it. If it’s not, it won’t.

Tools and electronics are where the practical locals shop. A cordless drill for $20. A decent set of socket wrenches. A working cassette deck, if that means something to you. Prices are negotiable in the old-school sense — not aggressively, but they’re not immovable either. Come in knowing roughly what something is worth and you’ll do fine.

There’s no admission charge, obviously, and no obligation. You can spend forty-five minutes working through the guitar rack and walk out empty-handed and nobody looks at you sideways. That low-stakes atmosphere is part of why people come back. It’s one of the few places in Ghent where browsing is still the point, not a prelude to a curated purchase experience.

The shop is open most days — check the hours before you go, since they shift seasonally — and it’s worth going on a weekday when it’s quieter. Weekends draw more foot traffic and the good finds tend to disappear faster. There’s parking in the lot adjacent to the building, which on Colley Avenue is already a minor miracle.

H&H isn’t trying to be anything other than what it is: a working pawn shop in a neighborhood that keeps changing around it. That’s precisely why it’s worth your time.
