Tim House will officially assume the role of athletic director at Old Dominion University (ODU) on Jan. 1, but he has already been immersing himself in the university’s sports community across Hampton Roads. In a recent interview with News 3 Sports Director Marc Davis, House shared his priorities and the strategic outlook he plans to bring to the Monarchs.
Establishing a Top‑Down Culture
House emphasized that success begins with a clear, values‑driven culture set by leadership. He said the department will focus on accountability, integrity, and a commitment to academic achievement alongside athletic performance. “We want every coach, staff member, and athlete to understand that excellence starts at the top and filters down,” House explained.
Learning from the Big Ten
Before joining ODU, House spent several years in the Big Ten, where he helped develop competitive programs and oversaw major facility upgrades. He believes that experience will help him navigate the unique challenges of a mid‑major program while leveraging best practices from larger conferences. “The Big Ten taught me how to build sustainable success, and I’m eager to adapt those lessons for the Monarchs,” he noted.
Football Focus
House identified football as a cornerstone of ODU’s athletic identity. He plans to strengthen recruiting pipelines, enhance player development resources, and deepen community engagement to fill the stadium and generate excitement. “We’ll work closely with local high schools and youth programs to showcase the opportunities ODU offers both on and off the field,” he said.
Men’s and Women’s Basketball
Both basketball programs will receive targeted support. House highlighted the importance of consistency, stating that the goal is to compete for conference titles and secure postseason appearances each year. He also stressed the need for academic support services to ensure student‑athletes succeed in the classroom.
Community and Alumni Involvement
Recognizing the role of the Norfolk community and ODU alumni, House plans to expand outreach initiatives, including fan events, youth clinics, and alumni gatherings. He believes that a strong bond between the university and its supporters will create a lasting foundation for the athletic department.
Looking Ahead
While House’s official start date is still weeks away, he is already meeting with coaches, administrators, and local leaders to set the groundwork for a successful transition. “I’m grateful for the warm welcome I’ve received and look forward to working with everyone to elevate ODU athletics,” he concluded.
