Fayette County Schools Adopt Budget Amendments and Launch New Oversight Dashboard

Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) reported that its financial outlook is improving as the district continues to tighten oversight and implement a corrective‑action plan. Earlier this month the district revised its projected deficit to roughly $5.4 million, a significant reduction from earlier estimates.

New Oversight Tools for the Community

Interim Chief Financial Officer Kyna Koch explained that the district is establishing formal monitoring and regular management reviews. “We’re beginning work on establishing a formal monitoring and oversight, and looking at a cadence for the formal management reviews,” Koch said.

To increase transparency, the school board received its first formal update on the corrective‑action plan via a public online dashboard. The tool allows community members to track progress on internal‑control improvements, especially in the permissions area, which Koch believes will strengthen the district’s financial safeguards.

Budget Amendments Target Specific Needs

During the board meeting, two budget amendments were approved. The first uses a $225,000 grant from Toyota to offset transportation costs, freeing district money for science kits at six schools. The second amendment cuts building‑fund revenue and planned repairs by more than $1.3 million after the state altered its funding calculation. “There’s not much we can really do about this. This is from KDE. It is a SEEK calculation,” Koch noted, referencing the state’s revised formula.

Community Concerns Remain

Despite the district’s progress, some community leaders say the financial strain is still being felt. C.J. Carter of the Sharp Futures Foundation warned that schools cannot rely indefinitely on community organizations to bring resources into buildings while those groups must also cover their own costs. “A school district cannot expect a community organization to continually bring resources into its buildings while leaving these organizations to figure out how to pay for themselves,” Carter said.

Transportation advocate Steven Fightmaster echoed the sentiment, noting that community groups are often the first to see budget cuts and are asked to do more with less. “They are often the first folks to see cuts, and asked to do more with less. And they are often the last folks considered when it comes to the budget,” he added.

Looking Ahead

FCPS officials remain optimistic that the combination of tighter oversight, the new dashboard, and targeted budget adjustments will continue to improve the district’s fiscal health. The board plans to monitor the impact of these changes closely and will provide regular updates to parents and taxpayers.

Stakeholders are encouraged to visit the online dashboard and attend future board meetings to stay informed about the district’s financial stewardship.
