The Arcade Restaurant Has Fed Memphis Since 1919

The Arcade Restaurant is the oldest café in Memphis. That fact alone would be enough to earn it a certain reverence, but what keeps the booths full on a Tuesday morning isn’t nostalgia — it’s the sweet potato pancakes, which arrive thick and amber-edged, dusted with powdered sugar and worth planning a morning around.

The building sits on South Main, just south of the main downtown corridor, in a stretch that has cycled through neglect and renewal more than once. The Arcade has watched all of it. Founded in 1919 by a Greek immigrant family, it passed through the Zepatos family for generations before new owners took it over in the 2000s, keeping the bones intact: the long lunch counter with its spinning stools, the vintage signage, the tiled floors worn smooth in the paths people actually walk. Elvis used to come here. There’s a booth near the back where he reportedly sat, though the restaurant doesn’t make a circus of that fact, which is refreshing.

On a weekend morning, the place fills fast. A line forms outside before nine. The crowd skews local — regulars who know the server by name trading tables with tourists who found the place on their phones — and somehow it works without feeling curated. The dining room is narrow and bright, with windows along the front that let in the South Main light. It smells like coffee and bacon grease in the best possible way.

The menu runs from standard diner breakfast through lunch plates, but the sweet potato pancakes are the calling card and the reason most people show up. They cost around $10 and come with a side. The omelets are solid and generously sized. For lunch, the club sandwich and the soups cycle through dependably. Nothing on the menu is trying to impress anyone; it’s just cooked well and brought out fast by people who have clearly been doing this a while.

Coffee comes in a thick ceramic mug and gets refilled without asking. That detail matters more than it should.

Service is efficient and warm without being performative about it. The servers here move with the particular economy of motion that only comes from years in the same room. Nobody is doing a bit. A table of construction workers next to a table of out-of-towners eating their first Memphis meal, and the Arcade absorbs both without adjusting its register.

Lunch is quieter than breakfast and worth knowing about. The crowds thin out, the pace slows, and the lunch counter becomes a genuinely pleasant place to sit with a bowl of soup and the newspaper, which is how diners like this were always supposed to work.

Parking along South Main is metered but usually available. Expect a wait on weekend mornings — twenty minutes is common, thirty is not unusual. It moves quickly once it moves. The restaurant closes in the mid-afternoon, so early risers and the late-breakfast crowd have the best shot at a seat without standing outside.

More than a century in, the Arcade doesn’t need to explain itself. It just opens the doors, fires up the griddle, and lets the pancakes do the talking.
