A Rainy Tuesday at Reconsidered Goods Is Time Well Wasted

The ceiling fans at Reconsidered Goods spin whether or not anyone is watching, which, on a Tuesday morning in February, they mostly aren’t. That’s when I prefer it. The shop sits on a stretch of Southwest Boulevard that doesn’t get written about much — a block where a tortilleria and a transmission shop share a zip code — and on a slow weekday, the place is yours to wander without having to perform enthusiasm for anyone.

Reconsidered Goods operates as a creative reuse store, which is a polite way of saying they’ve figured out how to make obsolescence charming. The concept: businesses, schools, and manufacturers donate surplus materials — fabric scraps, cardboard tubes, mismatched tiles, foam offcuts, wooden spools, rolls of contact paper that were ordered in the wrong color — and the store sells them to the public at prices that seem almost embarrassingly low. A shopping bag stuffed with ribbon, craft paper, and what turned out to be theatrical gel filters ran me about four dollars last winter.

That’s the appeal, and also the trap. You walk in for a spool of wire and leave with a box of vintage index-card dividers, three yards of upholstery vinyl, and a genuine uncertainty about your life choices. The inventory changes constantly — not because they rotate stock strategically, but because the donations arrive unpredictably and the shelves fill and empty on their own schedule. There’s no algorithm curating this place. It’s just whatever showed up this week.

The store is run by a nonprofit, and there’s a community workshop side of things — classes in bookbinding, printmaking, sewing, general making — that attracts a mix of artists, teachers building classroom budgets, and parents who have run out of weekend ideas. The classes tend to land in the fifteen-to-forty-dollar range depending on length and materials, which makes them cheaper than most evenings out and arguably more useful.

On a rainy day, the fluorescent-lit aisles feel less like browsing and more like archaeology. I’ve found bolts of upholstery fabric from a hotel renovation, a crate of unused ceramic tiles in a shade of avocado green that only exists in 1972, and, memorably, several thousand unused name tags from a conference that apparently never happened. Nobody knows the full origin story of most things here, and that’s part of it.

The clientele skews toward art teachers, set designers, crafters who’ve grown allergic to Hobby Lobby, and a certain type of very organized parent who treats the supply wall like a farmer’s market. There are also just regular people who showed up because a friend told them about it and stayed an hour longer than planned.

Southwest Boulevard isn’t a destination corridor — you go there for a specific reason, not to drift — but Reconsidered Goods rewards the detour. Budget somewhere between nothing and thirty dollars, depending on your restraint, which you will overestimate. It’s open Wednesday through Saturday, closed Sunday through Tuesday, so that rainy Tuesday I mentioned is actually wishful thinking on my part. Friday morning, then. Same energy.

If you’ve got kids who like making things, bring them. If you’re a teacher who’s spent the last decade buying supplies out of pocket, bring a car. If you’re neither, go anyway and accept that you’re going to come home with something you didn’t know you needed until it was already in your hands.
