Montgomery County police are urging anyone with information to come forward after a suspect opened fire on a vehicle at a busy Wheaton intersection early Saturday morning. The incident, captured on surveillance video released Monday, follows a first‑degree assault that occurred just hours earlier.
Sequence of events
According to investigators, the assault began shortly after 2 a.m. on August 9 near the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Ennalls Avenue. A man entered his parked car when unknown individuals approached. One of the assailants punched the driver in the face before the victim fled the scene in his vehicle.
Police say the suspect then pursued the driver a short distance, firing several rounds at the vehicle near the intersection of University Boulevard West and Elkin Street – only a few blocks from the original confrontation. The victim’s car sustained a bullet impact, but no injuries were reported.
Video evidence and public safety concerns
The released footage shows the suspect firing multiple shots while innocent motorists pass by, smoke billowing from the weapon. After the gunfire, three suspects can be seen walking away from the scene.
Local business owner Maria Peredo, who runs the Kantutas restaurant adjacent to the shooting location, expressed how the violence has shaken the community. “We are scared. It happens all the time now. Our customers are afraid to come in, and business has suffered,” Peredo said.
Police request for assistance
Montgomery County Police Department officials are asking anyone who saw the suspects, heard the gunfire, or captured additional video to submit tips through the Crime Solvers of Montgomery County website or by calling the dedicated tip line at 1‑866‑411‑8477. The department emphasized that community cooperation is essential to apprehend those responsible and restore safety to the neighborhood.
Impact on the community
Residents in the Wheaton area have voiced growing concerns about a rise in violent crime. The recent shooting adds to a string of incidents that have left local merchants and families feeling vulnerable. Law‑enforcement officials assure the public that they are increasing patrols and investigating the case aggressively.
Anyone with information is encouraged to act quickly, as timely tips can make the difference in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
