Bootlegger Brewing Fills a Real Gap in Jackson’s Beer Scene

Bootlegger Brewing opened on West Broadway a few years back and quietly became the most comfortable place in Jackson to drink a beer without spending twenty dollars on it. That’s a low bar in this town, but they clear it with room to spare.

The taproom sits in a low-slung building west of downtown, past the point where Broadway stops feeling like a tourist corridor. It’s not a long walk from Town Square — maybe ten minutes — but it feels like a different world. Inside, the vibe is relaxed in the way that comes from not trying too hard: wood tables, decent lighting, a chalkboard listing whatever’s on tap that week. No TVs blaring sports. No DJ. Just people talking.

The beers rotate, but a few anchors stay consistent. Their Pale Ale is the one I come back to — dry-hopped without being aggressive about it, with enough bitterness to feel like something. The Hazy IPA has its fans; if you like that style, it’s a solid example. On colder afternoons, I usually lean toward whatever dark beer they have going, and they tend to keep at least one porter or stout on the board through the fall and winter months. A pint runs you around seven to eight dollars, which is genuinely reasonable for Jackson.

They do flights, which is worth knowing if you haven’t been before or if the board looks unfamiliar. Four four-ounce pours for around twelve dollars — useful for getting a lay of the land without committing. The staff pours generously and doesn’t rush you through the explanation if you have questions about the brewing process. It’s the kind of place where that conversation can happen naturally.

The food situation is simple: they partner with local food trucks, and what’s available changes depending on the day and season. I’ve had good tacos out there. I’ve also shown up and found nothing beyond some bar snacks. Check their social media before going if food is the priority, or eat beforehand and treat the beer as the main event, which it is.

The outdoor seating area gets good afternoon sun and faces west, which means you’re watching the light change over the mountains if the sky is clear. In summer, this is where everyone ends up. Come early on a Friday if you want a picnic table — by six o’clock they’re all taken. Fall is actually my favorite time out there: the crowds thin, the temperatures drop to sweater weather, and you can usually get a seat without planning ahead.

Bootlegger doesn’t have the production scale of Snake River Brewing or the name recognition of Roadhouse, but it has something those places sometimes lose: it feels like a neighborhood spot. Locals actually drink here on Tuesday nights. That’s rarer in Jackson than it should be, and it matters more than any single beer on the menu.

If you’re staying in town for more than a couple of days and want to see what Jackson looks like when it isn’t performing for visitors, a slow afternoon at Bootlegger is a reasonable answer.
