Madison, Wis. – On Nov. 10, the 51st anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald’s final voyage, a new documentary will hit theaters and streaming platforms. Titled We Finished Their Journey: The Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim, the film honors the 29 crew members who perished when the freighter sank in 1975.
Local effort brings history to life
The project is a collaboration between the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society and Big Fin Pictures. It follows 70 swimmers who, over a nearly two‑month period beginning July 26, 2025, attempted to complete the 411‑mile route the ship was scheduled to travel. The swimmers faced weather challenges, injuries, boat issues, blood clots and personality conflicts, underscoring the physical and emotional demands of the undertaking.
Voices from the organizers
Event Director Jim “The Shark” Dreyer said the film “tells the story of a remarkable journey, completed by good people for all the right reasons.” He added that families of the lost crew will have another way to remember their loved ones.
Executive Producer and Director Corey Adkins noted the documentary captures more than 20 distinct stories from dozens of participants. “If you think watching 70 swimmers go 411 miles would be boring, that wasn’t the fact, and you’re in for a treat,” he said.
