Arizona Attorney General joins multi‑state lawsuit accusing Dollar General of deceptive pricing

PHOENIX — The Arizona Attorney General’s Office has become a plaintiff in a federal lawsuit targeting Dollar General Corporation for alleged deceptive pricing practices. The complaint, filed jointly with 19 other states and the Federal Trade Commission, asserts that the discount retailer routinely charges customers more at the register than the prices displayed on shelves, tags, weekly circulars, and its website.

State and federal coalition allege widespread overcharging

According to the complaint, Dollar General operates more than one hundred stores in Arizona, serving many rural communities and households with limited or fixed incomes. The retailer markets a selection of items for $1 or less, positioning itself as a low‑price alternative to larger chains. However, the plaintiffs allege that the company has, for years, engaged in a pattern of “inaccurate pricing” that harms the very consumers it claims to serve.

“Dollar General promises convenience, low prices, and value, yet it has routinely charged customers more at the register than the prices displayed on shelves, price tags, and advertisements,” the complaint reads. “This pattern has persisted for years and affects millions of purchases across the country.”

Attorney General Kris Mayes calls the practice a rip‑off

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes issued a statement on Monday, describing the lawsuit as a necessary step to protect Arizonans from corporate greed. “Dollar General has ripped off Arizonans by systematically charging more for products than they advertised,” Mayes said. “The Arizona Attorney General’s Office will not allow greedy corporations to lie to their customers and take financial advantage of communities who can least afford it.”

Evidence includes consumer complaints and undercover tests

The complaint cites tens of thousands of consumer complaints nationwide in which shoppers reported being charged higher amounts than the advertised price. It also references an FTC investigation earlier this year that involved undercover purchases at Dollar General locations in several states; every purchase resulted in a higher charge than the advertised price.

In addition to shelf‑price discrepancies, the plaintiffs argue that Dollar General fails to honor the prices printed in its weekly circulars, mailed to customers, and posted online. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Tennessee, where the retailer is headquartered, and includes a coalition of both Democratic‑ and Republican‑led states.

Potential impact for Arizona consumers

If the court rules in favor of the plaintiffs, Dollar General could be required to change its pricing practices, provide restitution to affected shoppers, and possibly face civil penalties. Such an outcome would reinforce consumer‑protection standards and could benefit the many Arizona families who rely on Dollar General for affordable goods.

Arizona’s participation underscores the state’s commitment to safeguarding low‑income households from deceptive business conduct. The case also highlights the broader national effort to hold large retailers accountable for pricing transparency.

What’s next?

The lawsuit is expected to proceed through the federal court system, with both sides likely to present additional evidence and expert testimony. Consumers are encouraged to retain receipts and report any pricing discrepancies to state consumer‑protection agencies.

Dollar General has not yet responded to requests for comment.
