Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Ken Paxton held a campaign event Sunday evening at Schulman’s Movie Bowl Grille in Sherman, marking his 18th stop since the “Come and Take It” tour began on Oct. 17, according to KXII.
State Representatives Shelley Luther and David Spiller attended, along with Republican comptroller candidate Don Huffines. Mary Rapert, a local supporter, told KXII, “We really want the Republicans to win this, and we want to be as supportive as we possibly can in everything that we do.”
Paxton used the gathering to detail his “Protecting the Texas Promise” proposal. He said he would push for a $25,000 tax deduction for medical expenses, a $50,000 deduction for homebuyers, and a new “healthy living” deduction. He also pledged to double the child tax credit and to make the “Trump accounts” permanent so families can continue to invest in their children. Voter Larry Lewis told KXII, “I think that lowering property taxes is always really important. We need to make sure that people can live in their homes — we don’t need anybody losing their homes because of their taxes.”
Protestors were also present, voicing opposition to Paxton while event attendees lined up to hear the candidate. Paxton criticized Democratic opponent James Talarico, saying, “His rhetoric doesn’t match his current record,” and Talarico responded, “In the final days of this election, they are coming at us with everything they’ve got, they are scared, they are terrified, they see what we see,” as reported by KTEN.
Early voting in Texas remains open through Oct. 30, with Election Day scheduled for Nov. 3, according to KTEN. Residents are encouraged to cast their ballots early to avoid crowds and ensure their voices are heard.
What’s next: Sherman voters can vote early until Oct. 30, after which the focus shifts to the Nov. 3 election. Both Paxton and Talarico will continue touring the state, and local officials plan to host additional forums to discuss the candidates’ platforms before the final vote.
