John Forbes Wins Polk County Supervisor Primary, Unseats Incumbent McCoy

In a significant local political shift, John Forbes has won the Democratic nomination for the Polk County Board of Supervisors District 1, unseating incumbent Matt McCoy. Forbes, who has a long history of public service in Iowa, expressed his excitement about the new role and the opportunity to continue serving the community.

Forbes’ Background and Experience

Forbes has dedicated nearly two decades to public service, previously serving as a state representative in the Iowa House until his retirement in 2024. His experience also includes time as a council member in Urbandale. A pharmacist by profession, Forbes owned several Medicap Pharmacies in Polk County and surrounding areas before selling them in 2022.

His extensive experience with budgets and fiscal management, honed during his time at the state capitol, is something Forbes plans to bring to his new role. He emphasized the importance of determining where county funds can best benefit the residents of Polk County.

Campaign and Priorities

Forbes ran a vigorous campaign, knocking on over 10,000 doors and engaging with residents to understand their concerns. From these conversations, he developed key priorities, including addressing housing and food insecurity and improving water quality. Forbes highlighted the need to work with farmers and upstream representatives to reduce nitrate levels in Polk County’s water.

District 1 encompasses parts of Des Moines, Clive, West Des Moines, and Windsor Heights. Forbes is set to run unopposed in the November election, as no candidates emerged from the Republican primary.

Transition and Future Goals

Forbes has already begun discussions with McCoy to ensure a smooth transition. He expressed gratitude for the support he received from voters and looks forward to continuing his commitment to the county where he has lived for over 50 years. Forbes emphasized his desire to create a positive legacy for future generations, noting his deep roots in the community with his family and grandchildren residing in the area.
