Astoria Celebrates 40 Years of ‘Short Circuit’ with Film Fest and Museum Exhibit

Astoria, Oregon, is set to host a grand celebration marking the 40th anniversary of the beloved film ‘Short Circuit.’ From June 5-7, fans will gather on the Oregon coast for a series of events celebrating the iconic movie and its famous robot, Johnny 5. The celebration includes appearances by the film’s cast and crew, screenings, panel discussions, and trivia events.

Museum Exhibit Showcases Film History

A highlight of the festivities is a new exhibit at the Heritage Museum, part of the Clatsop County Historical Society. The exhibit features rare production artifacts, puppets, and props from the film, with the centerpiece being a gold Johnny 5 robot from ‘Short Circuit 2.’ This exhibit, which opens on Saturday, will remain on display for at least a year, offering visitors a glimpse into the filmmaking process behind one of Astoria’s most famous productions.

Chelsea Vaughn, the curator for the Clatsop County Historical Society, emphasized the exhibit’s focus on the movie-making process, including the design and interaction of the robot with human actors. Among the artifacts are original puppets and visual gag props, such as an umbrella exploding out of a toolbox, which Vaughn cites as a personal favorite.

Preserving Oregon’s Film Heritage

Richard Bates, the owner of the house used as Stephanie Speck’s home in the film, is also involved in preserving this piece of Oregon’s film history. Having purchased the house in 2019, Bates has worked to restore its exterior to match its appearance in the movie. He is currently recreating the ramp used by Johnny 5 to access the front porch during filming.

Bates hopes the anniversary event will enhance public appreciation for Astoria’s extensive film history, which includes classics like ‘The Goonies.’ He notes that efforts are underway to expand the Oregon Film Museum, with about 70% of the necessary funding already secured.

Organizers describe the event as the largest reunion of ‘Short Circuit’ cast and crew ever assembled, underscoring Astoria’s significant place in movie history. This celebration not only honors a beloved film but also highlights the rich cultural tapestry of Astoria and its contributions to the film industry.
