Final Closure of U.S. 280 at Pump House Road Scheduled for June 5-8

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has announced the final closure of U.S. 280 at Pump House Road, scheduled from the night of June 5 through the morning of June 8. This closure is necessary for the installation of the last two bridge girders as part of the ongoing project to widen the highway.

Closure Details

Starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, June 5, all lanes of U.S. 280 in both directions at Pump House Road will be closed. The westbound lanes will remain closed until the morning of Monday, June 8. Meanwhile, the eastbound lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings before closing again each night at 11 p.m.

In addition to the main lanes, the Pump House Road eastbound off-ramp will also be closed during nighttime work. Eastbound drivers will be directed to use the Green Valley Road exit as an alternative route. Pump House Road itself will be closed at night while a crane lifts the new bridge girders into place.

Project Progress

According to ALDOT, all lanes on U.S. 280 at Pump House Road are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, June 8. This work is part of a larger project to expand U.S. 280 to four lanes in each direction between Lakeshore Parkway and Interstate 459. The new bridge girders will support a center turn lane and a sidewalk over the highway.

ALDOT officials have reported that the bridge replacement is several months ahead of schedule and remains on track to be completed by early October. This progress is a significant step forward in improving traffic flow and safety in the area.

Traffic Advisory

Motorists are advised to anticipate major traffic delays during the closure period. ALDOT recommends using I-459, Interstate 65, and Lakeshore Parkway as the primary detour routes. Eastbound travelers should follow the same detour route in reverse.

Transportation officials encourage drivers to plan ahead and allow additional travel time during the construction period to minimize inconvenience.
