WAVE Foundation Inspires Environmental Stewardship in Cincinnati

The WAVE Foundation, a nonprofit organization partnered with Newport Aquarium, is making significant strides in fostering environmental stewardship within Cincinnati. By focusing on education, conservation, and volunteerism, the foundation aims to inspire the next generation to protect aquatic ecosystems.

Engaging the Community

Deputy Director Katie Campbell highlighted the foundation’s efforts to bring awareness to local schools and libraries, reaching over 450,000 people in the past 25 years. The foundation’s initiatives include taking animals from the aquarium into educational settings and organizing river clean-up events.

One of the foundation’s key campaigns, the WAVE Water Warrior Campaign, addresses the issue of single-use plastics, which pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems. Campbell encourages residents to replace disposable items with reusable alternatives, such as utensils and straws, to reduce pollution in waterways.

Upcoming Events

In celebration of World Oceans Day on June 8, Cincinnati landmarks like Paycor Stadium and Newport Aquarium will light up in blue to raise awareness. Additionally, the WAVE Warrior Pledge Project is scheduled for June 13, offering further opportunities for community involvement.

Residents interested in supporting the foundation’s efforts can participate in the upcoming river sweep, which last year successfully removed 444 pounds of garbage from the Ohio River. These initiatives underscore the importance of community action in maintaining healthy waterways.
