Gina Hinojosa Launches First Ad in Texas Governor’s Race During NBA Finals

State Representative Gina Hinojosa, the Democratic contender for Texas governor, has initiated her first advertising campaign for the general election. The digital advertisement will air during the NBA Finals featuring the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks. This strategic move aims to capture the attention of young male and Latino voters, demographics that have been challenging for the Democratic Party to engage in recent elections.

Ad Campaign Strategy

Hinojosa’s campaign has committed a five-figure sum to ensure maximum exposure on ESPN+ during the series. The ad portrays Republican Governor Greg Abbott as a puppet controlled by corporate interests, accusing him of imposing an ‘Abbott corruption tax’ on Texans through higher costs and underfunded public schools. Hinojosa, a former school board president, emphasizes her commitment to defending children, reducing energy bills, and challenging the influence of billionaires on Texas families.

The advertisement marks the first by either gubernatorial candidate since securing their party nominations in March. While Abbott has focused his campaign efforts on other Democratic candidates, he has not directly addressed Hinojosa’s accusations. Instead, Abbott has defended his record on public school funding, citing an $8.5 billion funding package passed alongside a school voucher program.

Campaign Financials

Hinojosa faces a significant financial gap compared to Abbott, who boasts a $96 million campaign fund. As of February, Hinojosa’s campaign had $618,000 after raising $2.3 million over eight months. Despite the disparity, her campaign aims to make strategic use of its resources by targeting specific voter groups through digital platforms.

Recent polls indicate Abbott holds a lead over Hinojosa, with a Texas Southern University survey showing him ahead by six percentage points. A significant portion of voters remains unfamiliar with Hinojosa, highlighting the importance of her ad campaign in increasing name recognition and voter engagement.

The NBA Finals ad buy reflects a calculated effort to connect with audiences that are pivotal in the upcoming election. By leveraging ESPN’s popularity among young men and the Latino community, Hinojosa seeks to bridge the gap and present her vision for Texas’s future.
