Family Honors Cincinnati Gym Owner, Advocates for Justice One Year After Tragic Death

One year has passed since the tragic death of Patrick Heringer, a beloved gym owner in Cincinnati, and his family is determined to keep his memory alive while seeking justice. Heringer was fatally stabbed in his home on East McMicken Avenue on June 4, 2025. The accused, Mordecia Black, had been released on parole after serving time in prison since 2016. Black reportedly removed his ankle monitor in February 2025 and was on the run when the incident occurred.

Legislative Efforts for Justice

In response to this tragedy, Ohio State Representative Cindy Abrams introduced the Reagan Tokes and Patrick Heringer Act. This proposed legislation aims to protect Ohioans from violent offenders on Post Release Control by granting judges greater discretion to incarcerate repeat offenders and mandating timely notifications to 911 centers when warrants are issued. The bill has successfully passed out of the House committee with a 12–1 vote and is set to be voted on by the Ohio House before moving to the Senate.

A Legacy of Community Impact

Patrick’s wife, Sarah Heringer, has been vocal about honoring her husband’s legacy beyond legislative and legal pursuits. She has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the City of Cincinnati but emphasizes that her focus is on celebrating Patrick’s life and the positive impact he had on others. In a heartfelt post, Sarah shared photos and stories of Patrick’s dedication to coaching, mentoring, and serving his community. She highlighted his role as an Army Captain and the countless lives he touched through his work and personal connections.

Sarah encourages the community to remember Patrick for the life he lived and the community he built. She invites others to share their stories about Patrick, emphasizing that he was much more than the circumstances of his death. Her message is clear: Patrick’s story is one of inspiration, resilience, and unwavering support for those around him.
