The Ucross Foundation is set to celebrate the reopening of the Big Red Ranch House, a historic landmark in Sheridan County, on June 16. After nearly a year of renovations, this 144-year-old building will once again welcome artists, locals, and tourists.
Community Event and Artistic Showcase
The celebration will kick off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, followed by an open house. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the renovated Ranch House and view the artwork of Sheridan artist Arin Waddell, featured in the Big Red Showcase exhibition. Light refreshments will be served, and the event is free and open to the public.
Later in the evening, a ticketed summer picnic with live music by local musician Dave Munsick will take place, offering a vibrant community gathering.
Preserving History and Supporting Artists
The Big Red Ranch House, built in 1882, has served various roles, including a home for ranching families and a stagecoach stop. In 1983, it became the headquarters for the Ucross Foundation, supporting artists by providing time and studio space. The recent renovations addressed significant structural issues, ensuring the building’s preservation for future generations.
The renovation was made possible by a generous $1.41 million donation from Ucross Trustee Armand Brachman and his wife, Mary. Their contribution not only preserved the building’s historical character but also enhanced its functionality with modern updates, including new roofing, plumbing, and electrical systems.
Artistic Contributions and Community Involvement
The Big Red Showcase, a new addition to the Ranch House, will spotlight Ucross alumni artists. Arin Waddell, a two-time artist-in-residence at Ucross, is the inaugural featured artist. Her vibrant artwork reflects the intimate connection with nature and wildlife, themes that resonate deeply with the community.
The Ucross Foundation’s efforts are supported by the Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund and other local partners, emphasizing the importance of cultural and artistic endeavors in the region.
Ucross President Caitlin Addlesperger expressed gratitude for the community’s support and the hard work of the board of trustees and staff in bringing this project to fruition. The reopening of the Big Red Ranch House marks a significant milestone in preserving local history and fostering artistic expression.
