Belmont Park, a historic racetrack located on the border of Queens and Long Island, is undergoing a significant transformation with a $550 million reconstruction project. This ambitious endeavor is set to bring the Belmont Stakes back to its traditional home after a three-year hiatus at Saratoga Race Course.
Modernizing a Historic Venue
The project involves replacing the old grandstand with a smaller, state-of-the-art facility designed for 21st-century horse racing. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “The opening of a new facility is something that can really give the industry a shot in the arm.”
Scheduled to reopen on a limited basis on September 18, the new Belmont Park will be fully operational by next spring, just in time for the 159th Belmont Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup World Championships in the fall of 2027. This consolidation of racing venues in New York will lead to the closure of Aqueduct Racetrack, focusing horse racing activities at Belmont and Saratoga.
Advanced Facilities for Horses and Spectators
The revamped Belmont Park will feature modern amenities, including 31 suites, a sports bar, and a giant infield video screen. The racing surfaces have been meticulously upgraded to ensure optimal conditions for horses, with new drainage systems and synthetic tracks for winter racing. Glen Kozak, NYRA’s executive VP of operations, highlighted the focus on safety and quality, saying, “The quality of the irrigation, the health of the grass — all those components that go into better racing and better for the horse and rider, we were able to implement here.”
Return to Tradition
During the renovation, the Belmont Stakes was temporarily shortened to 1 1/4 miles at Saratoga. However, the traditional 1 1/2-mile distance will be reinstated next year, restoring the race’s unique challenge. David O’Rourke, NYRA president, confirmed the return to the original format, emphasizing the significance of the Belmont Stakes as a “test of the champion.”
With the completion of this extensive project, Belmont Park is poised to reclaim its status as a premier venue for horse racing, offering a blend of historical charm and modern innovation.
