Donut Mill Closed. The Divide Bakes On

The Divide Bakery & Café sits on U.S. Highway 24 in the small community of Divide, about twelve miles west of Woodland Park, and on weekend mornings the parking lot fills before eight o’clock.

Kara Mathews has run the bakery for several years now, and her regulars — contractors heading up toward Cripple Creek, retirees who drove over from Woodland Park, a handful of ranchers from the Divide plateau — all seem to find their own rhythm in the place. Some grab a bag of pastries and go. Others settle into the small dining room with coffee and talk for an hour. Mathews moves between the counter and the kitchen with the practiced efficiency of someone who started early and still hasn’t slowed down by noon.

The menu is straightforward: house-made breads, cinnamon rolls the size of a softball, breakfast sandwiches on biscuits that are properly crumbly, and rotating daily specials that actually rotate. The green chile breakfast burrito shows up often enough that people plan around it. The soups, served at lunch, change with the season — a potato leek in November, a roasted green chile chicken in summer — and they’re ladled out thick rather than watered down.

What draws people back, beyond the food, is that the bakery doesn’t perform warmth. There’s no chalkboard with inspirational quotes. The aesthetic is functional mountain — wood paneling, mismatched chairs, a glass display case that shows what’s actually left rather than a staged version of abundance. By ten on a Saturday, the morning pastries are running low, and Mathews doesn’t pretend otherwise. When the sticky buns are gone, they’re gone.

Prices stay reasonable. A breakfast sandwich runs around eight or nine dollars. A cinnamon roll is four. Coffee comes from a local roaster, poured without ceremony into a ceramic mug if you’re staying. The lunch specials, soup and half sandwich, come in just under twelve dollars most days.

The Divide itself — elevation around 9,165 feet — has a spare, open quality that Woodland Park doesn’t quite share. The highway flattens out, the ponderosas thin, and the sky gets wide. The bakery matches that quality somehow. It doesn’t try to be more than it is, which, at this altitude and on a cold morning, turns out to be exactly enough.

Mathews has a small but loyal crew, most of them local, who’ve been there long enough to know the regulars by order if not always by name. That consistency matters in a place where turnover is fast and the tourist traffic is real but also seasonal. The locals who come in January are the same ones who came in July, and the bakery doesn’t change its behavior based on which crowd is in.

The drive from downtown Woodland Park takes under twenty minutes on 24 and passes through some of the better scenery the corridor offers. It’s worth making the trip on a weekday if weekends feel crowded. Tuesday mornings are quiet. The biscuits are still warm.
