Nelly Korda Wears USA Soccer Jersey at U.S. Women’s Open, Shares Patriotic Sentiments

Nelly Korda, currently ranked as the world’s number one golfer, showcased her patriotic spirit at the U.S. Women’s Open held at Riviera Country Club. Korda arrived at the course wearing a U.S. men’s soccer jersey, a choice that caught the attention of many as she wore it throughout her practice round.

The timing of her attire was significant, with the 2026 World Cup set to begin across North America later this month. Additionally, the U.S. Women’s Open provided a fitting backdrop for Korda’s display of national pride. The 27-year-old golfer explained that her decision to wear the jersey was not only a nod to her recent selection for the Solheim Cup team but also a celebration of her country.

“It’s amazing. That’s why I’m wearing red, white, and blue today,” Korda stated. “Getting to represent my country is always such a huge honor. I’m just really excited to kind of tee it up in Amsterdam playing for Ang, playing for our country. I’ve always made amazing memories playing in the Solheim Cup, and I can’t wait for more.”

Korda’s jersey featured the number 13, a number famously associated with U.S. women’s soccer star Alex Morgan. However, Korda revealed that the number holds personal significance for her. “It’s my favorite number, so that’s why I picked 13,” she explained. “One, my parents are 13 days apart. Our second major was my 13th win. It’s just always been a lot of people think Friday the 13th or 13 has been an unlucky number, but I’ve always loved the number 13.”

As Korda prepares to compete in the U.S. Women’s Open, she is aiming to secure her first victory in this prestigious tournament. After a winless 2025, Korda has already claimed three wins in 2026, including the Chevron Championship, the first major of the year. Her performance at last year’s U.S. Women’s Open saw her finish tied for second at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.
