Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo Returns to Huntsville’s Brahan Spring Park

Huntsville, Alabama, is set to welcome back the beloved Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo, an annual event that brings young anglers and their families together for a day of fishing and fun. Scheduled for Saturday, June 6, from 7 to 10 a.m., the event will take place at Brahan Spring Park Lagoon and is open to children between the ages of 6 and 12.

Community Tradition

The Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo has become a cherished tradition in the community, offering children the opportunity to engage with nature and enjoy the timeless pastime of fishing. Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett expressed pride in hosting the event, emphasizing its value in encouraging outdoor activities and family bonding.

The lagoon will be well-stocked with over 700 pounds of catfish, including 19 tagged fish worth $100 each and one specially tagged fish worth $1,000. This setup promises excitement and the potential for young participants to reel in significant prizes.

Participation Details

Participants can register online or on-site, but they must be registered and checked in to claim any tagged fish prizes. The fishing competition will commence at 7 a.m. and conclude at 10 a.m., with an awards ceremony following at 10:30 a.m. While children may receive assistance with baiting hooks and handling fish, they must independently hook and reel in their catches to qualify for prizes.

For those looking to hone their skills before the big day, the Brahan Spring Recreation Center is offering “Get Fishing Rodeo Ready” sessions on May 16, 23, and 30. These sessions are designed for children ages 6 to 12, with registration required due to limited space.

The Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo not only provides a platform for young anglers to showcase their skills but also reinforces the importance of community events that support family values and outdoor activities. It is a testament to Huntsville’s commitment to fostering a family-friendly environment where traditions are celebrated and new memories are made.
