Somewhere Quiet and Old: Hazel Dell Farm’s Farmers Market

The Green Bay Farmers Market on Broadway runs on Saturday mornings from May through October, and if you show up expecting a polished, Instagram-optimized spectacle, you’re going to need to recalibrate.

The market sets up along Broadway in the heart of the old warehouse district, which suits it. The buildings are industrial, the sidewalks are uneven in places, and the vendors are the kind of people who have been doing this for a while and don’t feel the need to explain themselves. That’s not a complaint. It’s part of why the place works.

You park where you can — the lot off Dousman or along the street — and by 8 a.m. on a decent Saturday in July, there’s enough foot traffic to make navigation mildly strategic. The market isn’t enormous. You can walk the full length of it in ten minutes if you’re not stopping, but stopping is the point. The vendor count runs somewhere in the 40s on a good week, mixing produce growers, bakers, prepared food stands, and a smattering of craft sellers.

The produce here is legitimately seasonal, which means in June you’re looking at asparagus and radishes and not much else, and by late August the tomatoes are actually worth getting worked up about. Several vendors grow heirloom varieties that you won’t find at Pick ‘n Save, and they’ll tell you more about those tomatoes than you possibly asked for, which is either charming or a lot depending on your morning coffee intake.

The baked goods move fast. Bread, pastries, pie — the serious shoppers get there before 9. There’s usually at least one vendor doing something with local honey, another with jam, and someone selling cheese curds that are fresh enough to squeak in a way that would embarrass a grocery store version.

Prepared food options cover the basics: kettle corn you can smell half a block away, tamales from a vendor who’s been there long enough to have regulars, and depending on the week, something more unexpected. It’s not a food-hall situation, but you can absolutely eat breakfast while you shop, which seems like the correct use of a Saturday.

Prices are reasonable without being suspiciously cheap. A dozen eggs will run you three or four dollars. Tomatoes by the pound are comparable to what you’d pay at a good grocery store, but not the same as what you’d pay at a grocery store that’s been good about the tomatoes. The distinction matters if you care about tomatoes, and some of us do.

What the Broadway Farmers Market doesn’t have is much in the way of fuss. There’s no app, no loyalty card, no sponsored tent with a brand ambassador. The vendors are mostly farmers and small producers who live within a reasonable drive, and the whole operation has the feeling of something that exists because it’s useful, not because someone decided a farmers market would be good for the neighborhood’s image. That’s rarer than it should be.

Go in the summer. Bring cash, though a few vendors take cards now. Bring a bag. Show up by 8:30 if you want the bread. The market runs until noon, but the best stuff doesn’t.
