In a significant development for Alto, Texas, the Alto Independent School District (ISD) has announced Dr. Zach Crawford as the lone finalist for the position of superintendent. Dr. Crawford, who currently serves as the superintendent for Zavalla ISD, is a lifelong East Texan with a rich background in education, having held roles as a teacher, elementary principal, and secondary principal.
The decision by the Alto ISD trustees marks a pivotal moment for the district, as they look forward to welcoming Dr. Crawford after the mandatory 21-day waiting period. During this transition, Andy Trekell will step in as interim superintendent, bringing his experience from previous superintendent roles at Etoile ISD and Hemphill ISD.
Dr. Crawford expressed his commitment to the community, stating, “East Texas schools are more than institutions—they are the heartbeat of their communities. I understand the pride, expectations, and trust placed in a school district, and I approach this work with both humility and determination.” His vision includes a strong emphasis on extracurricular programs, athletics, fine arts, and community engagement, all of which contribute to a well-rounded student experience.
Board President Aaron Low expressed confidence in Dr. Crawford’s leadership, saying, “Dr. Crawford’s experience, leadership style, and dedication to rural education make him an excellent fit for Alto ISD. We are excited about the future of Alto ISD under his leadership and look forward to welcoming him to the Yellowjacket family.”
This change in leadership comes after Superintendent Derrick Conley announced in April that he would be leaving Alto ISD to take on the role of director of career and technical education and virtual learning at Little Elm ISD in Denton County.
