Callie Mae’s Barkery & Bath, a beloved pet store originally established in Kansas City’s Waldo neighborhood, is set to open a new location in Lenexa this fall. The store, inspired by owner Sarah Deters’ rescue dog Callie Mae, has become well-known for its homemade pet treats and grooming services.
From Kansas City to Lenexa
Sarah Deters, who has a long history of fostering dogs with Kansas City-based Chain of Hope, found her passion for pets and culinary arts merging into a business venture. Callie Mae, her ‘foster fail’ boxer, inspired the creation of the store that first opened in September 2024. Now, two years later, Deters is expanding her business across the state line to Lenexa, where a growing development will host the new store.
The Lenexa location will offer an expanded inventory compared to the original store, including a larger selection of dog food and an additional self-wash station for pet grooming. Deters hopes to attract pet owners from the area, building a community around shared love for pets.
Community and Pet-Friendly Environment
Deters emphasizes the importance of community, noting that wherever Callie Mae’s opens, it tends to foster a strong connection with local pet parents. The new Lenexa location is strategically placed near dog-friendly apartments and the upcoming KC Bier Co., which will feature an off-leash dog zone, indicating a strong demand for pet-related services in the area.
Callie Mae’s Barkery & Bath is not just about selling pet products; it’s about creating a welcoming space for pet owners to gather and share their love for their furry companions. The store’s unique offerings, such as cheddar fish treats and Maggie’s maple bacon bars, named after Deters’ other boxer, Maggie, are just part of what makes this business special.
With the expansion to Lenexa, Deters and her business partner, Wiltz, owner of Woof’s Play & Stay, aim to continue their mission of providing quality pet care and fostering community among pet lovers.
