Fort Worth is set to welcome a new addition to its community with the opening of the Bamboo Room, a mahjong lounge located at 6115 Camp Bowie Blvd., Suite 144. The lounge, spearheaded by Kristen Trapnell and her mother Carolyn Penny, is anticipated to open in late July or early August. It aims to serve as a game parlor, retail shop, and community hub for mahjong enthusiasts across the city.
A Game with Deep Roots
Mahjong, a strategic game played with tiles, typically involves four players who draw and discard tiles to achieve a winning hand. The game has a rich history, originating in China as a card game before transitioning to tiles. It was introduced to the United States in the 1920s and was standardized in the 1930s by a group of Jewish women in New York, who formed the National Mah Jongg League.
The Bamboo Room will offer a variety of services and products, including tile sets from boutique manufacturers, racks, mats, and other accessories. The lounge will also host beginner classes, open play sessions, a competitive league, and private events such as birthday parties and bridal showers.
Building Community Through Play
The idea for the Bamboo Room was inspired by Trapnell and Penny’s personal experiences with the game. Penny began playing mahjong over 20 years ago in a weekly group formed to support a family friend. This tradition became a part of Trapnell’s upbringing, and she recently embraced the game herself, leading to the creation of the lounge.
The Bamboo Room aims to be a welcoming space for players of all skill levels. “We want people to feel welcome here,” Trapnell said. “You can make a mistake, and we don’t care. We just want you to come and make friends, enjoy the game that we love.” Penny hopes the lounge will foster a sense of community, with regular visitors and familiar faces.
Open play sessions will be available for $30 per session, with an annual membership option for $99, allowing unlimited drop-in play. Competitive league play will be organized in six-week sessions with prizes for participants.
