Athens-Limestone Hospital Introduces New Sleep Apnea Treatment

Athens-Limestone Hospital in Alabama is enhancing its treatment options for patients with obstructive sleep apnea by introducing the Genio system. This FDA-approved technology, brought to North Alabama by local specialists Dr. Paul Papajohn and Dr. Keith Hill of Valley E.N.T. Associates, offers a new approach for those suffering from moderate to severe sleep apnea.

Innovative Treatment

The Genio system represents a significant advancement in sleep apnea care, providing an alternative to traditional therapies like CPAP machines. Instead of using a mask or external airflow device, the Genio system employs gentle nerve stimulation to activate muscles on both sides of the tongue, helping to keep the airway open during sleep. This system includes a small implanted stimulator and a wearable external component that powers the device overnight.

Traci Collins, President of Athens-Limestone Hospital, expressed enthusiasm about the new treatment option, stating, “We are proud to support physicians like Dr. Papajohn and Dr. Hill as they bring innovative treatment options and advanced surgical care to North Alabama.”

Patient-Centric Features

The Genio system is designed with several patient-focused features, including a battery-free implant, smartphone-based comfort settings, usage tracking, MRI compatibility for most 3T scans, upgradeable technology without additional surgery, and a compact design suitable for travel. Dr. Papajohn emphasized the importance of these features, noting that many patients struggle with traditional therapies and that this advanced therapy is designed with both comfort and long-term use in mind.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a common but serious condition linked to disrupted sleep and increased risks of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and chronic fatigue. The introduction of the Genio system at Athens-Limestone Hospital marks a significant step forward in providing effective treatment for this condition in the local community.
