UChicago Campus Grapples with Sexual Assault After Fraternity Party Incident

HYDE PARK — The University of Chicago community is confronting a painful reality after a 21‑year‑old woman reported being sexually assaulted at an Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity party on Sunday night. The alleged assault occurred around 1:50 a.m. in a bathroom inside the fraternity house at 5625 S. University Ave., according to Chicago police and the university’s crime log.

Details of the alleged assault

The victim told authorities she was not fully conscious when she was found partially undressed in the bathroom, while the alleged assailant was also partially undressed. Police reports obtained by the Chicago Sun‑Times describe a group of up to five men cheering and appearing to encourage the activity, and attempting to block two of the victim’s friends from entering the bathroom.

Campus response and student concerns

Students say the university’s safety alert on Sunday was the first notice many received about a sexual assault on campus. The incident has sparked frustration over what students describe as limited preventative measures and a desire for more concrete action beyond “it’s horrible.” One unnamed undergraduate asked, “What are we going to do about it besides say, ‘It’s horrible?’”

Graduate student Sydney Schoenfield, who noted the university already offers trainings on consensual sex, said more education is needed. “I personally would hope that institutional responses come in the form of more education,” she said. “Can we just keep educating people on how to ask for consent, and not proceed until you receive it?”

Community voices on fraternity culture

Lauren Valice of the Blocks United Revolutionary Network, which set up a table outside the Regenstein Library, warned that the focus on fraternities should not stop at “destroying these facilities.” She urged a broader, systemic approach to address the underlying culture that enables such violence.

First‑year doctoral student Katherine Ren linked the assault to broader gender expectations within Greek life, noting, “There’s a lot of social pressure to perform a certain kind of gender expression… For fraternities, the performance of masculinity is, ‘How do you treat women?’” She added that some groups advocate for banning fraternities and sororities entirely, finding those arguments “pretty… convincing.”

University and fraternity statements

The Lambda chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi issued a statement saying its members are “deeply disturbed by the sexual assault that occurred” and that the party was shut down after the incident. A spokesperson for the fraternity’s national headquarters told WBEZ that none of the men cheering outside the bathroom were members of the chapter.

University officials confirmed they have identified a person of interest—who is not a University of Chicago student—and have banned that individual from campus. The university continues to cooperate with Chicago police in the investigation.

Calls for systemic change

Community members emphasized the need for ongoing prevention programs, noting that peer‑led education has been effective at other institutions. Research assistant Jaedon Churchill Dicks of UChicago Medical Center said, “Colleges as institutions are a place where we are sending our young people to first enter into the world… It makes sense to have a level of anxiety around their safety.”

While some argue that eliminating fraternities would reduce such incidents, others caution that shutting down these social spaces could limit opportunities for student interaction. “The frat system obviously has tons of problems, but I personally don’t know if taking away environments is really the best way to go,” Schoenfield said.

Next steps

Blocks United organizers plan to attend the upcoming UChicago Feminist Forum meeting and continue gathering student and staff perspectives. The university’s ongoing investigation and the community’s push for more robust consent education signal a collective effort to address sexual violence on campus.
